Overview
Think about having a personal coach for a sport. A good coach doesn’t just play the game for you — they watch you, correct your form, and push you to try harder. The goal is to make you better, not just to win the next practice round.
AI tutoring tools work a bit like that coach, except they’re available 24/7, never get impatient, and can explain the same concept ten different ways without sighing. Tools like Khan Academy’s Khanmigo, Microsoft’s Copilot for Education, and even general chatbots like ChatGPT are showing up in classrooms and living rooms across the country. Students use them to get homework help, understand difficult concepts, and prepare for tests.
The appeal is real. But so are the questions worth asking about how these tools are actually being used — and whether they’re helping students learn, or just helping them get answers.
What AI Tutors Do Well
AI tutoring tools have genuine strengths, and it’s worth being honest about them.
- Patience and availability. An AI tutor will explain the same concept as many times as you need, at any hour, without making you feel bad for asking.
- Personalized explanations. If one explanation doesn’t click, you can ask for another. You can ask for simpler language, more examples, or a different approach — all in seconds.
- Low-stakes practice. Students who feel embarrassed asking questions in class can get help privately. A student who has been lost for weeks can quietly catch up without anyone knowing.
- Instant feedback. For tasks like grammar checks, math drills, or vocabulary practice, AI tools can give immediate, accurate corrections.
These are not small things. For students who lack access to private tutors or after-school support, an always-available AI can fill a real gap.
Where AI Tutors Fall Short
AI tutors are good at giving answers. Learning, though, is less about getting answers and more about working through the process of finding them.
Cognitive scientists call this idea “desirable difficulties.” When students retrieve information from memory, struggle with a hard problem, or work through a mistake on their own, they build stronger, longer-lasting understanding than if someone hands them the solution. The struggle itself is part of how the brain learns.
- Getting the answer isn’t the same as understanding it. A student who copies an AI-generated essay hasn’t practiced writing. A student who reads an AI’s math solution hasn’t practiced problem-solving.
- AI tools don’t know what you actually know. They respond to what you type, not to what’s happening in your head. A student can sound like they understand something without actually understanding it at all.
- There’s no relationship. A human teacher notices when a student is disengaged, frustrated, or confused in ways that don’t show up in their questions. AI tools don’t pick up on any of that.
The concern isn’t that AI tutors exist. It’s that students might use them to skip the part of learning that’s slow and uncomfortable — which happens to be the part that works.
Common Concerns
Over-Reliance
When students turn to AI for every question before trying on their own, they miss the productive struggle that builds real understanding. Over time, this can make it harder to work independently.
Academic Integrity
Using AI to write an essay or solve a problem set — and turning it in as your own work — is a form of academic dishonesty. Many schools are still figuring out how to draw those lines clearly.
The Equity Problem
Students at well-funded schools tend to have teachers who can spot the difference between a student who’s thinking and one who’s outsourcing their thinking. They have adults in the loop.
Students at underfunded schools are more likely to receive AI tools as a substitute for support that’s been cut — smaller classes, tutoring programs, counselors. Rolling out chatbots is not the same as investing in education, even when it gets marketed that way.
Accuracy
AI tools can be wrong. They can sound confident while giving incorrect information. Students who don’t already have a baseline understanding of a subject may not catch those errors.

If a student can get the right answer with AI help but can’t get it without — have they actually learned anything? And if the answer is no, whose responsibility is that?
