Guiding Questions

In this blog we’re going to be investigating how students sometimes misuse artificial intelligence (AI) in school. While AI can be helpful, some students use it in ways that hurt their learning. This raises questions like:
— What does it mean to abuse AI in school?
— How does AI misuse affect learning and academic honesty?

How Students Abuse AI

AI abuse happens when students rely on AI to do work for them instead of using it as a learning tool. This can interfere with skill-building and understanding.

Completing assignments automatically: Using AI to generate full answers without learning the material.
Avoiding critical thinking: Skipping problem-solving and analysis by copying AI responses.
Misrepresenting work: Turning in AI-generated content as entirely their own.

Consequences and Responsible Use

Misusing AI can have negative effects, but responsible use can still support learning when clear boundaries are followed.

Loss of learning: Students may struggle on tests or future classes without real understanding.
Academic consequences: Schools may treat AI misuse as cheating or plagiarism.
Ethical use: AI should be used for studying, explaining concepts, and checking understanding—not replacing effort.
