The Building Block of Nutritions

Our bodies rely on essential nutrients to fuel energy, growth, and health. There are two types of nutrients:

Macronutrients:

  • Carbohydrates: Main source of energy. Found in grains, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Proteins: Needed for growth and repair of body tissues. It is found in meat, beans, and dairy.
  • Fats: Important for brain health and energy storage. Found in oils, nuts, and avocados.

Micronutrients:

  • Vitamins: Help with immune function, skin health, and energy production (e.g., Vitamin C, Vitamin D).
  • Minerals: Important for bone health, nerve function, and hydration (e.g., calcium, iron).

How Nutrients Work in Our Bodies

Our bodies transform nutrients into energy, strength, and essential support for daily functions.

  • Digestion: Nutrients are broken down in the stomach and intestines to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
  • Energy Production: Carbohydrates are converted into glucose, a sugar that fuels cells, especially in the brain and muscles.
  • Repair and Growth: Proteins are broken down into amino acids, which help build muscles, skin, and organs.
  • Storage and Insulation: Fats are stored for long-term energy use and help protect organs.

Fun Facts

Here are some interesting facts about nutrition:

  • About 60% of the brain is fat, so omega-3-rich foods like fish and walnuts are known as “brain food.”
  • Blueberries, spinach, and nuts are considered “superfoods” because of their high nutrient content.
  • We get about 20% of our daily water from food.
  • Bell peppers have even more Vitamin C than oranges, making them a powerful immune booster!

Review

Let’s quickly recap what we learned about the science of nutrition:

  • What nutrient is our primary source of energy? Carbohydrates
  • Which nutrient helps build and repair tissues? Proteins
  • What do vitamins support in the body? Immunity
  • What nutrient is essential for bone health and nerve function? Minerals
